Literacy in Our Communities

Why does literacy matter?

In our counties, about one fifth of adults can’t read a simple story to their children or the instructions on a prescription bottle. Increasing numbers of new residents to the area seek instruction in English in order to thrive in their new homes. We at LVODC know that improving literacy will improve our community’s health, economy, and social life. We also know that literacy enhances quality of life by opening new worlds of information and inspiration, sparking creativity and curiosity, and connecting individuals to each other and to the world.

  •  Literacy means access to opportunities for life.

  •  Literacy improves individuals’ and families’ health, finances, community involvement, pursuit of further education, self-efficacy, pride, and enjoyment of life.

  •  A more literate community is a stronger community.
